Lost in the Clouds

Title: Lost In The Clouds
Location: Roraima, Venezuela
Date: 2002/12/25
Camera: Canon Powershot S200

This photo was taken during my 3 week trip in the Gran Sabana, Venezuela. The photo is taken from the top of Roraima, a Tepui located in the extreme south of Venezuela and contains the punto triple, or triple point, of the borders between Venezuela, Brasil, and Guyana.

Tepui is the name of the mountains found in this region. They are characterized by flat tops and steep sides. Towering at over 3,000 meters, Roraima is considered the king of them all. In addition to hosting a wide array of curious and exotic fauna, beds of crystals, and amazing vistas, Roraima is also (in)famously known for the fact that it provided the setting for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel "The Lost World."

Although I have many photographs of the trek, a grueling 3 day hike to the top, 2 days exploring the top, and 2 days to return, I feel that this one picture represents most vividly the feeling of finding oneself in the "Lost World."
